I can’t help but love the influence softer tones and pastels are having in home décor and fashion, not because I decorate primarily in pastels (although aqua is my signature color!), but because it reminds me of my mother. She constantly redecorated our homes but she always defied trends. She believed in decorating in the colors she loved, which were pastels. Through the years as the trend toward earth tones prevailed, my mother continued to decorate with butter crème walls as the background to calming coral, aqua and mint color schemes, changing furniture, carpet and fabrics every few years, but always keeping to her favorite colors.
Pastels are the colors I grew up with, so it’s no wonder I love Benjamin Moore’s 2013 Color of the Year, Lemon Sorbet (see the picture above from benjaminmoore.com). I would love to pair Lemon Sorbet walls with Pottery Barn’s soft blue Jacqueline wood dresser (see below) in a guest bedroom and complete it with Hunter Douglas’s Pirouette Shades in Glacier to soften the rooms natural light.

Looking back, I now know why I fell for a very expensive and at the time very impractical mint green handbag while in the South of France two years ago. The color spoke to me because it reminded me of my mother and our homes that she so personally decorated in “her” colors.
