It’s a good thing Roman Shades are very popular now because they are hands-down my favorite style of window covering. Fresh, contemporary, and unique are all reasons why so many people love them including me. Traditional Roman Shades are made with fabric on the face that has rings sewn on the back with strings that gather up the shade so it waterfalls as you raise it. The biggest advantage is the option to use any fabric for a soft tailored look. The disadvantages historically have been the street side appearance shows the rings and strings, the large stack when all the fabric is gathered in the “up” position and child safety concerns with all the cording on the back of the shade.
Enter Hunter Douglas innovation! Vignette Modern Roman Shades give the look of a hobbled or tiered shade, but there are no exposed rear cords and the shades lift up into a compact fabric covered head rail. There are many colors, options and lift systems including motorized, completely cordless, and Top-Down/Bottom-Up.
If, like me, you love the look of a true fabric shade and want to bring some punch into the room with pattern and unique details, go for a traditional Roman Shade custom-made from a drapery workroom or Hunter Douglas’s Design Studio shades. I love the look of pinstripes or smaller scale patterns made into fabric shades and then banded in a solid color. There are many styles of custom fabric shades from flat tailored styles to hobbled styles with large billowy folds and the fabric choices with a custom-made shade are endless!
