Spruce up your spaces with this classic, new-to-you style!
As the name suggests, you can expect to find lots of Old Glory’s stars and stripes scattered about an Americana abode, but the style is adaptable to even the most demure of tastes.
A red, white, and blue décor can be a vibrant patriotic homage, reminiscent of plastic gingham tablecloths and summer barbeques. For other homes, the theme will go hand-in-hand with a nautical décor. Americana can be shaped for the bright and kitschy, the contemporary, and the traditional home. It is versatile and stunning.
For the bedroom, consider a white, four poster bed, with crisp white linens and a heirloom quilt draped over the foot. Dressers and bedside tables will look lovely in their natural grain, or can be painted navy, white, or burgundy and sanded down for a Cape Cod weathered look.
For the kitchen and the dedicated decorators, a royal blue or bright candy apple red tile backsplash will enhance your cooking area. Almost all kitchen wares and appliances come in standard reds, whites, blues, and blacks. A fresh coat of white paint on the cupboards, and a cleverly rearranged collection of spatulas and spoons will do the trick.
For the living room, you have a wide array of options, namely in throw pillows. A few striped pillows, paired with a few printed with stars; even plaids, checkers, and polka dots all have a place within even the most subtle Americana arrangements. Placing navy curtains around white shutters, such as Hunter Douglas™ Heritance® hardwood shutters, creates a clean silhouette. Add some large star-shaped curtain tiebacks for additional allegiance.
For the bathroom, look no further than wall color. With white sinks and commodes, navy or burgundy paint on the walls will immediately pull the room into its patriotic personality. Accessories such as a ship on the toilet tank, a navy-painted wood shelving unit, or a plain, striped shower curtain, play nicely with this theme.
For the dining room, a larger task may be to incorporate the stars and stripes motif by using a wallpaper border. A current trend in several styles is burlap. Using burlap as a table runner, along with red and blue chargers produces a warm, rustic American table.
If you find yourself happy with your current décor, but desiring small changes, with items found at stores like Pier 1 and Homegoods, you can decorate the front porch, patio or party space for the summer holidays using many ideas similar to those above. An old trunk here, wicker furniture there, some pops of red against a blue and white background, and you’ll create your own fireworks!
