With every new year (and decade – hello 2020s!), is the desire to do things better. From our health to our habits to our homes, we commit to leveling up across all aspects of our lives. As window covering experts, we feel strongly that a well-designed space is essential for a life well-lived, and of course we think window treatments are a big part of that! 😉
So, if new blinds or shades are on your home’s New Year’s resolutions, then check out our 2020 window treatment trends guide below. And if you’re ready to sign up for a free in-home design consultation, click here.
Tone-on-tone color pairings have been a popular fashion trend for the past few years, and in 2020, this trend will crossover into interior design in a big way. Rather than pepper several colors around your home, just choose one and then vary the tones. Too many colors can cause visual overwhelm, which is why tone-on-tone color palettes are so brilliant. You’ll add visual interest to the space without the technicolor overload.
And we can’t talk about layering without highlighting its energy efficiency benefits. More layers, like combining shades and drapery, provide more insulation, decreasing heating and cooling leakages at the window.
When most people think of neutrals, their brains conjure up shades of cream, gray or white. But there is actually a whole spectrum of neutral colors beyond these go-to (and very overused!) colors. Soft coral, blush, lavender and barely-there mint green are just a few examples of neutral tones that will tickle your visual senses in subtle, unexpected ways.
The next time you’re considering just basic white blinds for your windows, choose a neutral with just a hint of something extra, whether it’s pastel-toned fabric or a textile with different tones interwoven into the fabric. Because no one wants to be #basic in 2020.
The plant obsessed will rejoice in this next trend – garden-inspired fabrics depicting leaves, branches and other outside accoutrements. These fun textiles are a refreshing alternative to classic floral prints that can be overly feminine.
And don’t worry, garden-inspired doesn’t have to mean green fabric (although green is Behr’s 2020 Paint Color of the Year). We offer an extensive collection of garden prints in a wide range of colors guaranteed to match any color scheme.
Bold Design Statements
From innovative shapes to impactful color combinations, bold design statements are the perfect way to set the tone for 2020 living. Dress your windows in bold fabric prints or for a more subtle (but still impactful) look, consider a window treatment style with interesting construction, like unique pleating, folds or cutouts. Case in point – Hunter Douglas Designer Banded Shades in the photo above. Why choose standard horizontal vanes when you can choose a unique geometric pattern!
And before we move to the next trend, we wanted to offer this pro tip for picking out patterned fabrics. Busy, detailed or extremely colorful prints can often look overwhelming in a space, especially as full-panel drapery. If you’ve fallen in love with a fun fabric, but are worried about over saturation, then consider shades which have a smaller fabric footprint. The full pattern won’t be seen unless drawn making them a great alternative to full panels.
2020 is going to be THE year for fully automated window treatments, with motorized blinds and shades moving beyond simple point-and-click remote control access. Window coverings can be fully automated, courtesy of PowerView® Motorization (the most advanced lift system from Hunter Douglas) and the extensive list of smart-home integrations its compatible with (see full list here). Scheduling shades to automatically move throughout the day? Check. Voice-controlled shades? You bet. The options are endless and the system’s capabilities get more and more sophisticated as smart-home integrations are added.
Nearly all Hunter Douglas styles can be motorized – including shutters and drapery, making a whole-home solution that accommodates different window treatment styles a reality for 2020.
Cord Free Living
Every decade, products not only become technologically smarter, but also easier to operate. And window treatments are no exception. All Hunter Douglas styles feature cord-free options, so if full-on smart home functionality scares you, then a simple cordless system could be the perfect way to upgrade your user experience in 2020.
And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the safety benefits of choosing cordless. Dangling strings can pose a safety risk to small children and pets (not to mention they look bad), which is why we always encourage our clients to go cordless whenever it makes sense.
